EMPLOYMENT TODAY
Computerisation : Mechanisation : Rationalisation : Standardisation: Consolidation : Realignment : Downsizing : Cut Backs
These words, along with many others like them, some new, some traditional and some that are being used in a new context are words that have come to mean unemployment to thousands of people in all trades, industries and professions, across a broad and ever widening spectrum. These words have come to mean unemployment on a scale that a few years ago would have been unimaginable.
Unemployment has become a word that strikes fear into the people of our country, and we are not suffering alone; Europe is suffering. The United States, the wealthiest and most powerful nation on earth and traditionally known as the land of opportunity, is suffering and the indications are that the trend will continue for the foreseeable future.
Millions of jobs have disappeared from all but a few corners of the civilized world.
Unemployment is not going to go away. No politician with a grain of common sense would claim to have a formula or policy that would eradicate this scourge that has come about over the last decade. No political party would dare to include the eradication of the curse of unemployment in its election manifesto. To do so would be political suicide. They will all claim to be able to reduce it, some more than others, but eradicate it they cannot.
Unemployment strikes at different sections of the population in different ways.
The employment marketplace has been turned upside down. Those who have held the same job with the same company for years find it hardest to obtain employment elsewhere. People who have never needed to look for jobs do not know the market value of their skills and experience. Worse still they do not know where to look for prospective employers who are prepared to pay good money for those skills and experience.
Note the words, " market value". Today everything has a market value. Mrs Thatcher laid heavy emphasis on the word "market" and the melody, or malady if you prefer, lingers on. The phrases "market forces" and "market led" were, and still are, on every politician's lips be they for or against the market driven economy.
We give of our time, go where we are told, use the skills and experience to execute the tasks we are set. We use our judgement to arrive at decisions that lead us to achieve what we are paid to achieve. Our knowledge and experience enable us to perform tasks for people who require, and are prepared to pay for, those tasks to be performed.
We do this in exchange for money to buy the lifestyle we enjoy, or would like to enjoy.
When did you last ask yourself the questions:
What am I good at?
We may or may not get satisfaction from our work. We may be one of the lucky ones who live for their work and cannot envisage life without it. (Did I say lucky?)
We may work with nice people, We may work for nice people. We may work with nice materials. We may be allowed to buy the products of the company we work for at specially reduced prices. Nice work if you can get it, especially if you happen to want it. Take a step back, look at the real motive for going out to work. The real motive that moves us to go out to work is the desire for money.
Money to buy the things we need in life. Money to buy the things we want, to fulfil the obligations we have undertaken. Money to fulfil the obligations others have foisted upon us. Money to pay off the debts we have incurred in the exercising of our judgement. In short, we work for money.
Money IS freedom.
This publication is about YOU. Putting you in a position whereby you, if you follow the course, will be in a job and able to fulfil your obligations to yourself and to others for whom you are responsible. You will be able to do this by earning money.
These people will give away money in exchange for your time and your skills.
Don't waste it. Read through each section once, as quickly as possible, then read each section again, slowly, carefully studying each section as you progress. This time picture the action you will need to take relevant to the section you are studying.
I will tell you bluntly what you have to do and how to do it. I will no doubt find a few tender spots in your make up as we go along. As we progress you will be required to ask yourself searching questions. Be truthful for it is yourself you are answering to. If you embark upon this course under the cloud of self delusion you will never truly know your own worth.
Guarantees? Forget it. There aren't any. Remember "life's a bitch and then you die". No guarantees that you will get the job you want, or any job at all for that matter. Were I to offer you the cushion of guarantees you may well be tempted to use it as an excuse to do less than is required to be successful.
When you are in employment you had a built in structure to your life. You didn't have to think for yourself in terms of where to go and what to do next. That is the first thing you will miss.
Now your structure, your prop, your leaning post has gone, and you have to set about building your own.
You have just completed your first lesson. You may not have realised or recognised what was missing and why you were feeling unsettled. Well, now you know the reason.
You have already shown great initiative; you have decided to invest in your future by investing in a system. Let your system be your prop from now on, at least until you get the job you want. You can lean on the system as much as you like; I guarantee it is strong enough to bear the responsibility. The question is, are you up to what will be a much tougher regime than the one you were used to when you were supported by the prop of employment?
If you have and work to a system you immediately put yourself in the forefront of work seekers. You will see more people, more of the right people who have jobs to fill.
If you stick to the system, and do not allow yourself to fall into the trap of deluding yourself you are doing all you can to get a job by simply keeping busy, you will be at the head of the pack, the crème de la crème of people playing the job market.
Remember this and you will be successful.
There are an awful lot of sheep out there in the marketplace wandering about aimlessly on the off chance they might fall over a job. They stagger into reception, wearing a shell suit, and say something like:
You will know what you need to say, in advance.
You will know the reason why you need to say it.
You will know what needs to be done, in advance.
You will know the reason why you need to do it.
What you are about to do is learn: progress through a gentle learning curve.
The "feel good" factor plays a very important part in what you are setting out to achieve. The "feel good" feeling, will rub off on others and make them feel good too. It's infectious, a great lubricant in getting to the heart of the matter. Getting around, getting to know who you should be talking to, who is making decisions as to who gets the job and who runs second, getting to know.
That's what matters, that's what The Job Seekers Guide is all about: information.
Information is your staff of life from now on.
Read on to find out where to look for it, and what to do with it when you find it.

Jobs for life are all but gone, secure jobs as they were called.
Trade unions have become impotent and are for the most part fighting a losing battle in their struggle to preserve jobs. The areas where employees could take it for granted they had jobs for life are no more. The employment marketplace has been turned upside down. Those who have held the same job with the same company for years find it hardest to obtain employment elsewhere. People who have never needed to look for jobs do not know the market value of their skills and experience. THE CHANGING FACE OF WORK
Given that we live in such an economy, let's get down to basics. Where better to start than with a look at attitudes and the new and changing world of: WORKWe give of our time, go where we are told, use the skills and experience to execute the tasks we are set. We use our judgement to arrive at decisions that lead us to achieve what we are paid to achieve. Our knowledge and experience enable us to perform tasks for people who require, and are prepared to pay for, those tasks to be performed.

How much is it worth?
Who would want to buy?

THE TASK AHEAD
I am in a job, and run a business on the side. One of the products of my business you are reading now. You have paid good money to read what I have produced.Don't waste it. THE "FEEL GOOD" FACTOR
Remember, remember at all times, when you have taken a lot of rejection, suffered a lot of procrastination, times when you have been lifted up only to be let down, when some useless bozo who happens to be related to the interviewer's cousin gets the job you should have had - remember you are special. You have a system. You have a ground plan. You are committed to the execution of that plan.Remember this and you will be successful.
There are an awful lot of sheep out there in the marketplace wandering about aimlessly on the off chance they might fall over a job. They stagger into reception, wearing a shell suit, and say something like:
"You don't want nob'dy do yer?"
You will NOT behave in such a manner, nor will you make such statements. You will know what you need to say, in advance.
You will know the reason why you need to say it.
You will know what needs to be done, in advance.
You will know the reason why you need to do it.
What you are about to do is learn: progress through a gentle learning curve.
You are going to learn to think differently from the way you have thought before.
You are going to learn how to behave differently from the way you have behaved in the past and know the reason why. You will be the better for doing so because you will be shaping your future. Much satisfaction is to be had from the experience. The "feel good" factor plays a very important part in what you are setting out to achieve.
